Hank's '58 Strat />

“When I got on the plane, I thought we going to Peru but when we landed we were in Perth!”  Hank Marvin

Hank Marvin is one of the most affable, funny and generous musicians I have ever met. His first visit to Concept Music was in March 2001 when he came in and very casually wandered around before buying a copy of Acoustic Guitar Magazine and leaving.  It caught me off guard and I was too polite (or perhaps, in retrospect, too nervous?!) to introduce myself or blurt out “Aren’t you Hank Marvin?!”.  That would turn out to be first of many visits and, not unlike lots of our customers, the relationship developed quickly developed into a lasting friendship.

Hank is still a regular visitor and I have even had the pleasure of formally interviewing him for the NAMM Oral History of Music program,  when he gave the answer (above, in bold) to my question “How did you end up living in Perth?”.

Recently, I'm happy to say that we've added Hank's son, Ben Marvin to the Concept Team, and he’s a natural. H'es also a wonderful guitarist, and LOVES helping people get started on their musical journey and chatting to the many local musicians who frequent us ... it’s exciting and it’s also a privilege.

So, how did we end with one of Hank’s ‘58 Strats on display?

Not long after Ben started working here he said “How about I bring in one of Dad’s guitars in? Would that be OK?” ... and so, just as casually as Hanks very first visit some 20 years ago, the next week Ben walked in with an old beaten up tweed case containing one his Dad’s original 1958 fiesta red Fender Stratocasters & said “Here you go!”

Spinning around slowly in our showcase, when most people first see it they pause only momentarily without realising it is actually a GENUINE 1958 Fender Stratocaster and not a “new” Fender Custom Shop Relic!  Then when watch people read the story and suddenly realise what it actually is, you can almost feel a hush descend over the entre store!  It’s awesome!  There is certainly something about vintage guitars (especially old Fenders!) that is quite awe inspiring, and that same sense of wonder seems to seep out of even “new” Relic guitars in a way that is hard to understand... but is certainly a fact.  And a fact we are extremely fortunate to enjoy on a daily basis here at Concept Music!

You get to meet so many people in the music industry. And none nicer than the true gentleman that Hank Marvin is.

Drop in and see Hank’s guitar for yourself soon, and click here to check out some close up shots and the chat Ben and I had about the Strat.

Warm regards,

Graham Hoskins
